IUD (Intra-Uterine Devices) at Juno Specialists

Some specialist GPs at Juno have undertaken additional training to provide IUD insertion.

IUDs are small, usually T shaped devices which are placed into the uterus to address a number of women’s health issues. IUDs can be used for contraceptive purposes and in the management of pelvic pain and heavy bleeding.

As is standard for Juno, long consultations allow you the time to explore whether an IUD is the right choice for you and your circumstance. And time to address any concerns or questions you may have about the process itself.

Juno GPs providing IUD insertions are sensitive to the many different presentations, experiences and histories that may influence your feelings about IUD or the procedure itself.

Your GP will take the time to fully understand your health history and any factors which may impact your physical or emotional comfort during the procedure.

Our top priority is that you feel safe enough, heard and cared for at all times. Your feelings will be respected, your experience will be taken into account, your voice will be heard.

You are in charge during the procedure - working in partnership with your doctor to achieve the best possible outcome.

IUD Questions:

  • There are Hormonal IUD’s (including Kyleena and Mirena) and non-hormonal IUDs - which are made from copper.

The Mirena is the most popular in Australia.

  • Mirena is used for contraception - over 99% effectiveness for up to 8 years.

It is also used to treat heavy menstrual bleeding, severe period pain and can be part of hormone replacement therapy for menopause symptoms.

The Mirena IUD works by releasing a small amount of levonorgestrel, a progestin hormone. This thickens cervical mucus to block sperm, thins the uterine lining to reduce bleeding, and may prevent ovulation in some users.

  • By thinning the uterine lining and reducing uterine contractions, Mirena significantly decreases menstrual bleeding. Around 85% of users experience a reduction in bleeding severity, and many find relief from severe period pain over time.

  • Mirena contains only progestin (levonorgestrel), unlike combination birth control pills, which have both estrogen and progestin. Because Mirena releases hormones directly into the uterus in a lower dose than the pill, it generally has far fewer systemic side effects. Some people may still experience mood changes, headaches, breast tenderness, or acne, similar to the pill.

  • IUD insertion can range from uncomfortable to moderately painful. The level of discomfort varies significantly from person-to-person. There are ways to try reduce pain during and after the procedure.

Your doctor will discuss what pain relief techniques might work for you in addition to various medication options.

We know that feeling safe enough, relaxed and comfortable can make a significant difference to your discomfort and pain. Your care team will do their best to ensure you feel this way.

Breathing techniques, guidance and explanation by your GP during the procedure help support the process.

  • Pre-Procedure Appointment

You’ll see your GP to complete an assessment and go through options to see if IUD is the correct course of action. Your GP will explain exactly what to expect during the procedure and provide you with as much (or as little) information as you prefer. You’ll also receive your prescription for the IUD to collect from a pharmacy. Your doctor will also explain what to expect after your procedure and options for pain management.

    IUD Insertion Procedure

Your second appointment at Juno is for the IUD Insertion Procedure. You’ll need to bring the IUD you’ve purchased from the pharmacy.

Your GP will only begin the procedure with your consent and will check in with you during the procedure. You are able to ask questions, stop the procedure at any time, ask for a break and communicate with your GP as you need to during the procedure. A nurse will be present with your GP to support you and to assist your GP.

After the procedure we usually ask you to stay in the clinic for 15-30 minutes to ensure you are feeling comfortable.

We love being a part of your healthcare and support team.
