Dr Josie Bourne: Neurodivergent Medicine for Families and Children

I’m Dr Josie Bourne. I'm a GP and a mum to 3 little boys. I am a mother of a neurodivergent child. And I'm all about neurodivergent medicine for children and families.

The parenting and family journey with neurodivergent kids is a totally different experience. It can be overwhelming for everyone.

There is an ocean of information available around Autism, ADHD, NDIS, therapies etc. It's not clear what is safe and appropriate advice/therapy and what is damaging and wasteful of all our precious resources - time, capacity and money.

I became weary and saddened by the old school medical approach to Autistic and ADHD Medicine. Treating something as a "diagnosis" and a "disorder" instead of being accepted as part of a persons neurotype - their brain type!

We all have different brains - that much is very clear and accepted.  Yet somehow neurodivergent children become labelled with a "disorder" which I refuse to accept.

All children will have challenges throughout their childhood, just as all adults do throughout their lives.  This is not disordered - this is just life in all it's glorious messiness.

All brains are beautiful.

I want to offer families with neurodivergent children longer consults.

So that I can get to know your child in a safe place without pressure or judgement.

I know it’s difficult to find neuro-affirming health specialists and therapists. I know the long waitlists.

I know the wild ride of neurodivergent parenting. The unbridled joy, the grief, the frustration, the sleep deprivation. The desperation when people can't fathom your life and just don't ‘get it’.

I want to help where I can - with food struggles, medication struggles, family coping strategies and low demand parenting. I bring strategies to minimise trauma of vaccinations. I can assist by connecting you with the right people.

And I am also here to support you - as the parent and caregiver to your amazing child/children. To promote acceptance and help letting go of expectations.

I want to change the way that neurodiverse ‘rainbow brains’ are perceived.

I want to change the journey so many of us are on. To rewrite the story of parenting neurodivergent children from something with negative connotations, to something remarkable.

If you have just started on your neurodivergent family journey or want support as you navigate the process, please reach out.

It would be a privilege to share your journey.
